Interactive 360° films
The realism of real footage combined with decisions that change the course of the action. The viewer is no longer just a viewer.
The realism of film, the freedom of a game
Two approaches have emerged in VR production. The first builds virtual worlds from scratch using computer graphics. The second keeps realism to the maximum and is based on recorded 360° footage. Graphics offer freedom, but they still rarely fool the brain as effectively as real footage.
An interactive 360° film combines the strengths of both. We shoot in at least 4K (usually 8K) and add interactions in the Unity engine, giving the user real influence over the action.
Examples of interactions
Safety training: a fire in the production hall
A fire breaks out in a production hall. Time slows down and the viewer has to quickly pick the right extinguishing agent by clicking the icons that appear. Each choice leads to another task, such as putting the steps for opening a fire hydrant in the correct order. Their answers determine which 360° film they see next.
Advertising campaign: Nike
We created an advertising game for Nike under the direction of the 180heartbeats agency and the F25 production house. Players bounced on a giant trampoline above Warsaw – to jump higher, they had to “catch” the logos that appeared just by looking at them. The interaction was driven by gaze alone.
What comes next
6DoF recordings, which allow limited movement within recorded reality, are developing fast, as are haptic gloves that convey sensations from the virtual world. We follow these technologies closely and adopt them once they are ready for client projects.
